A skirmish between military council troops and the Arakan Army (AA) occurred for a few minutes in northern Rathedaung Township, Arakan State.
Subsequently, junta troops stationed near Yay Soe Chaung Byuhar and Ma Nyin Taung opened fire with heavy weapons on neighboring villages at around 7 am on October 5, 2022, injuring a local resident in the arm with shrapnel.
After that, a regime fighter jet flew over Ma Nyin Taung area around 10 am and shot at Kalar Chaung and Kone Tan villages three times with heavy guns, residents said.
“The [military council’s] fighter jet fired three times. The heavy shells landed near residential villages. It is still hovering in the air. Almost all people have fled the villages now,” the resident said.
As a result of the junta’s shelling, a resident of Maung Phyu was hit in the arm by shrapnel.
Earlier, residents of villages near Yay Soe Chaung Byuhar and Ma Nyin Taung – Pyine Taw, Nyaung Pin Hla, Ma Nyin Taung, Baw Di Kone, Kon Tan, Kalar Chaung, Yay Myet and Thamee Hla – had to flee to safety due to artillery shelling by the junta.
A local said there was a clash between junta troops and AA at Ma Nyin Taung at around 6 am on October 5.
“We heard gunshots this morning from the area where the fighting was taking place. Then [junta troops] fired unilaterally into the surrounding villages. I think that was a threat to the residents. When they fired at the villages, the residents had to flee to their villages,” he said.
