Police members threaten locals by firing shots in some villages of Pantanaw Township

August 30th, 2021

Police members and the members of the military-backed village administration are threatening locals every night by firing warning shots into the air in some villages in Pantanaw Township in Ayeyawady Region.

More than five warning shots are fired without any reason while local police members and some villages who support the army are patrolling the village by motorbike at around 9-10 pm, a local said.

The firing of shots may be linked to the warning about the attacks on informants, according to locals.

Villagers are living in fear due to the shooting. Pro-military villagers have threatened that the army would be invited to the village if there is criticism about the army.

Under the directive of the military council, the village’s auxiliary fire brigade members are broadcasting propaganda via loudspeaker urging the people not to support the People’s Defense Force (PDF) and the National Unity Government (NUG) as these organizations are doing destructive acts, according to locals.

The people in these villages are not allowed to go outside after 8 pm. The firing of gun shots takes place only at midnight.

The military council’s troops usually fire shots to threaten the people in the villages and downtown wards in some regions of Myanmar. The military council is carrying out the arbitrary arrests of civilians every day, according to the news coverage by local media.

Local PDF members are carrying out attacks on the administrative pillars of the military council after the coup in Myanmar. It is found that the military council has provided local police stations in the villages and military-backed PyuSawHtee members with military weapons.
