Refugees from the IDP camps in downtown Paletwa in southern Chin State are in need of jackets and blankets as the winter has set in, said a person who is helping the refugees in Paletwa said.
In 2020, the Chin State government, the NGOs, private organizations and donors donated jackets and blankets for refugees. Transportation difficulties and internet blackouts have cut off connections with donors this year.
Among the refugees from the IDP camps in downtown Paletwa are the elderly, pregnant women and children. Currently, they are in need of jackets, supplements and medicines, a local from Abaungthar village said.
“The IDPs are in need of blankets, jackets and sheets as the winter has set in. Some unhealthy refugees need medical treatment. Although the nurses from the People’s Hospital provide medical treatment once a month, refugees can receive minor treatment only. Refugees need money for hospitalization,” a local from Abaungthar village said.
Currently, the WFP is distributing rice and rations to the refugees who fled to downtown Paletwa. However, the refugees have no money to buy medicine and vegetables, according to the refugees.
Since 2018 till date, fighting has been taking place between the Arakan Army (AA) and the military council in Arakan State and Paletwa of Chin State.
Around 5,000 refugees displaced by the ongoing fighting are taking shelter in safer places and the IDP camps in downtown Paletwa.
