Over 7,700 people from Kyaikto, Bilin, Thaton, Kyaikmaraw, Thanbyuzayat, and Ye Townships in Mon State have been displaced due to ongoing armed conflicts, according to the Mon State Humanitarian Network (MNHN).
The MNHN reports that heavy shelling and airstrikes by the military council, particularly in the Gyaing River basin area of Kyaikmayaw Township, are driving a growing number of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
According to the MSHN, fighting between the revolutionary forces and the military council has also forced some residents to flee their homes in Ye Township.
Ma Saung, the northern in-charge for MSHN, said: “People have fled because of the raids in Mon State. Some people are forced to move to other areas due to heavy shelling. As the situation is stable, they return home and continue their livelihoods.”
The report notes that while the number of IDPs in Mon State was relatively low in October, there has been an increase in incidents such as arbitrary arrests, detentions, and artillery shelling.
The IDPs are in need of shelter and food, the MSHN says.
According to the MSHN, in addition to Mon State, the fighting has displaced over 8,000 people in Kyainseikgyi Township in Karen State, which borders Mon State, and more than 7,000 people in Tanintharyi.
