Over 300 civilians in Arakan State died due to junta’s atrocities over eight months: AAPP

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) on 12 September, reported that between 1 January and 12 September 2024, the terrorist junta had killed 311 people in Arakan State.

In its statement, the AAPP reported a total of 1,362 deaths across Myanmar, including 311 fatalities from Arakan State.

According to the AAPP, among the causes of death, 108 people were killed by military airstrikes, and 99 were killed by heavy shelling, making shelling the second leading cause of death.

The investigation also cited other causes of death, including massacres like the one in Byaing Phyu village in Sittwe.

At around 6 p.m. on 8 September, a jet fighter carried out two bombings on a site in Shin Ywa village, Pauktaw Township, Arakan State, where the Arakan Army (AA) was treating prisoners of war and detainees. The attacks resulted in 17 deaths and 10 injuries.

Those killed in the attack are: U Saw Than Maung, Ma Hla Swe Khin, U Saw Nyi Nyi (aka) Taung Min, U Kyaw Thar Maung, Ko Phone Myat Paing, Ko Maung Thein Tun (aka) Nga Mae Khaung, U Thein Tun Aung, U Kyaw Win Maung, Maung Wai Yan Phyo,14, Maung Soe Min Aung,17, and 17 prisoners of war, according to the AAPP’s statement.

The AAPP reported that it has confirmed 1,362 deaths—451 women and 911 men—and has documented their names.

According to the AAPP, among the confirmed deaths include 179 people under the age of 18, and 165 over the age of 60.
