Ongoing armed clashes between military council troops and resistance forces in Kawthoung Township, Tanintharyi Region, have resulted in more than 1000 locals having to take shelter in the jungle on the border with Thailand, the head of the People’s Defense Forces (PDF) – Kawthoung told Than Lwin Times.
Fighting between the two sides began in Waingden village when regime troops entered Waingden, Parkalat, and Myaingtharyar villages, which are under the control of the Kawthoolei Army (KTLA) and the PDF, on 21 February.
As a result, residents of five villages, including Waingden, Parkalat, and Aungtharyar, were forced to take shelter in the jungles bordering Thailand.
Currently, regime troops are stationed in Waingden village, and on 23 February, approximately 200 soldiers from Bokepyin Township were further deployed in Shankoe village.
Mone Tine, head of PDF – Kawthoung, said that fighting in the areas is likely to increase due to the junta’s reinforcements.
Thai media reported that the Thai military has stepped up security at the border near the villages where fighting took place.
Eight military council soldiers were killed and many wounded in the clashes in Waingden village, and two members of the PDF’s combined force were also injured.
