Frontline sources have reported that a division commander, along with more than 100 members of the military council who had fled during the battle to capture Indaw, on the border of Kachin State and Sagaing Region, have been captured by resistance forces in Katha Township.
Indaw is the base of the military council’s Light Infantry Division-77 frontline headquarters. The National Unity Government (NUG)’s Defense Ministry announced that after the joint resistance forces captured Indaw town at around 8 p.m. on 7 April, the division commander and junta soldiers abandoned the camp.
An official from the defense force confirmed that the division commander and his group were arrested on the night of 8 April.
“They were arrested last night. I’m not entirely sure about the details. More than 100 soldiers fled. The officer has been handed over. The division commander was stationed in Indaw, which serves as a military tactical operation command,” the official said.
Members of the defense forces said that the captured division commander and his group have been directly transferred to the NUG, but it is still unclear what actions will be taken next.
The resistance forces launched an offensive to capture Indaw on 16 August 2024. Nearly eight months later, on 7 April 2025, the town was successfully captured.
The NUG announced that the battle to capture Indaw was coordinated by the NUG’s Military Region-1, in collaboration with the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) Battalion (9) Special Column, defense forces from Mohnyin, Sagaing, Katha, Indaw, Banmauk, Shwebo, Pyin Oo Lwin, Kale, Myingyan, Pakokku, and the All Burma Students’ Democratic Front (ABSDF).
Indaw is a town located 27 miles from Namsi Awng, a gateway town to Kachin State. It is positioned along the Mandalay–Myitkyina railway and the Mandalay–Myitkyina Union Road.
