One killed, seven injured in heavy shelling in Moebye

Fighting continues to intensify in Moebye Township on the Shan-Kayah border. A local woman was hit and killed in the military council’s heavy shelling on February 17th, according to a local.

“On February 17th, a house owner was hit and killed by a heavy shell. I heard the news that some people were injured today,” a local from Warripaling.

Seven people including a child were injured by heavy shells. The injured are two women and five men, an official of the Moebye Rescue Team said.

“A woman is in critical condition as she has got a leg injury. The rest are in stable condition,” he said.

The injured are: U Kyaw Htay, 53, and Yuzana Tun, 32, from Myoma ward, Lin Htet Oo, 27, from PawOoTit ward, Kyaw Win Khaing, 28 from Thityarkone and Lin Nyo,28, from Sikar No.1 ward.

The rescue team finds it difficult to rescue the stranded locals as the military council continues firing heavy weapons. Since February 16th, Moebye Township has seen intense fighting for three consecutive days.

The military council is carrying out an offensive with the persistent firing of heavy weapons and using tanks and jet fighters.

At least five houses were hit and destroyed by heavy shells. Till February 18th, fighting continued to intensify.

The Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF) has warned the public to avoid going to the conflict-hit townships.
