One killed and five wounded by artillery shelling in Thandaunggyi Township

Artillery shell fired by the military council’s 7th mile camp killed a local and wounded five others in Pyarsakhan village in Thandaunggyi Township, on the evening of 6 April, according to local news sources.

Four heavy shells which were intentionally fired by the military council into the village without any battles landed near the village. The artillery shelling killed an older woman and wounded five others. Of five wounded persons, two are in critical condition, a local from Thandaunggyi said.

“The grandmother who returned home died on the spot as the heavy shell landed in front of her. Among the five wounded persons are two under-age girls. They are in critical condition. The military council intentionally fired heavy shells into the village without any battles,” the local told the Karen Information Center (KIC).

The wounded persons are still receiving treatment at Taunggo Hospital, according to the ground news sources.

Villagers fled to safer places following the battles between the military council troops and the PDFs in Leiktho in Thandaung Township on 1 April. Currently, there are around 3,000 IDPs in Leiktho, according to the persons helping the IDPs.

Villages in Kyauktaga village-tract in northern Thandaunggyi sees the rising number of IDPs due to the battles between the PDFs and the military council along the eastern bank of Sittaung River. They are in urgent need of emergency rations, locals said.
