The total number of civilian deaths has reached nearly 400 in Tanintharyi Region during over two years from February, 2021 to February, 2023, according to the report by the Southern Monitor, a research organization on 5 March.

According to the report, 394 civilian deaths and 146 civilian injuries were recorded during two years and one month.

This year’s February alone saw 34 civilian deaths and 10 injuries. Most civilian deaths were recorded in Yebyu, Dawei, Palaw and Thayetchaung Townships.

Civilian deaths are linked to the military council’s artillery shelling, abduction and killings during military operations, shooting and arrest for security reasons and killings under the name of the assassination of informants by the revolutionary forces.

In late February, there were 37 battles between the military council troops and a combined force of the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) in Tanintharyi Region. The military council soldiers burned down more than 200 civilian houses in Palaw Township, according to the Southern Monitor’s report.

Due to ongoing conflicts, more than 28,000 locals have fled to nearby forests and safer places. They are in need of humanitarian assistance.
