Nine civilians including a woman were sentenced by the court in Hakha Township in Chin State under the sections of the Counter Terrorism Law, according to the Chin Human Rights Organization (CHRO).

On July 29th, Police Col Tin Kyaw Thu from Hakha Police Station filed the cases against them. Eight persons were sentenced to five years each in prison under Section 51 of the Counter Terrorism Law and the rest, to three years in prison under Section 52 of the Counter Terrorism Law, an official of the CHRO.

“Although they are ordinary persons, the military council unjustly arrested them in February and March for alleged links with the Chinland Defense Force (CDF). The sentencing of them came nearly five months after detention. They were charged in connection with the photos related to terrorism and a link with the CDF,” an official of the CHRO says.

“As those who participate most in the revolution are youths, the military council regards the people as its enemies. The military council unjustly arrested and accused youths. The military council should distinguish between the civilians and armed persons. The military council should not carry out unjust accusation and imprisonment of the civilians,” an official of the CHRO says.

Among nine unjustly-imprisoned persons is just the 19-year-old woman who was sentenced to five years in prison. They all will be sent to Kalay prison in Sagaing Region.

At least 30 persons being detained by the military council are facing their court trials in Hakha.

The military council troops are significantly committing war crimes such as targeted attacks on the civilians, the burning of houses and the arrests and killings of civilians in Chin State, the CHRO says.
