Local authorities have detained more than 30 Myanmar citizens including some local residents from Phaicham Veng ward in Moreh of Manipur State on India-Myanmar border on the morning of 1 November, citing security reasons, according to a local resident.

“The joint force of commando, police and army inspected the detainees and then took them to the police station. They are still under interrogation. The joint force is conducting inspections in the remaining wards,” a local resident from Moreh said.

Security is tightened after a Manipur police officer who was inspecting the construction of the heliport in the Myanmar border town of Moreh was shot and killed by a sniper on the evening of 30 October.

Border security force, Manipur Police Commando and Assam Rifle are jointly conducting inspection in the border town, Moreh.

The joint force arrested 32 undocumented Myanmar IDPs and 11 Kuki people from Manipur, a local resident said.

ÒThey are planning to collect biometric data for the issuance of temporary cards in respective wards. The joint force also checks other documents. I have heard that the detainees will be released only after collecting biometric data. But it is not clear what will happen now. Nine men were taken to another place. I don’t know where they are taken. The remaining people remain at the police station,” a local resident said.

In the past, the Manipur government arrested Myanmar IDPs and repatriated them.
