Since May, the military council has cut electricity in more than ten villages which failed to pay power bills in Bilin Township in Mon State, locals told the Than Lwin Times.

“The department told the houses which fail to pay power bills that it would cut electricity if they fail to pay power bills. As far as I know the department has cut power in most of the villages on the lower part of the road. There is no power cut in the villages on the upper part of the road as the villages are closed to the armed organizations, a local told the Than Lwin Times.

The military council has cut power at all the houses in two villages.

“In the past, the village electrification committee collected power bills. Now, the people themselves pay power bills to the committee. The committee no longer collects the power bills. I think the committee avoids collecting power bills as it may be interspersed,” a local told the Than Lwin Times.

The electricity department has cut power to all houses in Zokethoke and Winka villages. It cuts power at the houses which fail to pay power bills in around ten villages including Alu, Nyaungpalin and Taungswan villages.

Due to the power cut, the people face a lot of difficulties and some Small and Medium Enterprises have suspended their operations, a local says.

A combined team of the military-appointed administrative council, police members and the electricity staff is collecting the power bills in downtown Bilin.

They threatened the people in some wards to pay power bills at the electricity office and to cut power if the people fail to pay power bills.

In addition, the military council removes and seizes meter boxes from the houses which failed to pay power bills.
