The military regime’s Infantry Battalion 102, based in Demoso Township in Karenni (Kayah) State, has been firing artillery day and night for no apparent reason since the first week of January, according to residents in the eastern part of the township.
On the morning of 15 January, more than 10 artillery shells hit villages in eastern Demoso Township, damaging homes.
Locals said the military regime may have fired artillery without fighting because of drone attacks on Kayah State Day celebration, which falls on 15 January.
“We haven’t heard any news of clashes in the area, but we have in Loikaw. I’m not sure if they keep firing heavy weapons because of the incident during the Kayah State Day celebration,” said a resident from eastern Demoso.
One person was killed and eight security personnel were wounded in the attack on the Kayah State Day event in Loikaw, according to the military council news source.
On 11 January, artillery shells struck villages in eastern Demoso and burned down a house. Two monasteries were also damaged by artillery shells.
