The military council continues to carry out the forced eviction of locals in Kyaukkyi and Mone Townships in the territory controlled by No. 3 Brigade of the Karen National Union (KNU), according to the KNU’s statement on June 29th.
Fighting continues between the military council and the forces under the KNU in Kyaukkyi and Mone Townships.
From June 25th to 28th, there were around six clashes between the KNU and the military council in the villages of Kyaukgyi and Mone Townships. In addition, the military forced the people from nearly 20 villages and downtown wards in Kyaukkyi Township to leave, according to the KNU’s statement.
On June 25th and 26th, there were three clashes, resulting in 19 deaths from the military council. On June 27th and 28th, there were three clashes, resulting in eight more deaths of the military council.
There were no reports of casualties from the KNU, according to the KNU’s statement.
On June 24th, the military forced the people to leave the villages by firing heavy weapons into the villages.
One June 27th, the military council warned the people in Theintan and Myittar wards in Kyaukkyi Township to leave their homes. On June 28th, the soldiers based in Ywarkantlant village continued to evict the people from Ywakantlant, Htokewarsiek, Pyi Taw Thar Gyun Gyi and Shwe Thaung villages, the KNU says.
On June 28th, the Karen Youth Organization (KYO) in Kyaukkyi Township and the Karen Women’s Organization (KWO) issued a statement, denouncing the violations of human rights in Kyaukkyi Township. Due to the firing of heavy and light weapons by the military council, more than 10,526 locals from 12 villages have fled to safer places.
Among the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are women, children and pregnant mothers. They are in urgent need of rations, shelters and medicines. They face health problems as they are taking shelter in the forests in the rainy season, a member of the KWO in Kyaukkyi Township says.
“They face a lot of difficulties in the forests. They face a shortage of food and medicines. They have no safety. They have gone into hiding when they hear the sounds of artillery shelling. I have not met my family members yet,” a member of the KWO told the KIC.
A total of 16,137 people from 30 villages in the KNU-controlled Mone and Kyaukkyi Townships have fled to safer places, according to the KNU’s statement.
A combined force of the Light Infantry Division-20, 124, 439 and 340 of the military council are mainly active in the KNU’s No.3 Bridge-controlled territory. The commander of the military council’s LIB-20 evicted the people from 15 villages on three village-tracts in Kyaukkyi Township, according to the KNU’s statement on June 24th.
