Locals from Palawkone, Nateaintaung, Shandwat villages in Palaw Township in Myeik District have fled to safer places as the military column is heading to the villages, a local woman who is helping the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
The military troops arrived in these villages via Palaw yesterday after the fighting in Palaw Township in recent days. The military arrests the villagers and uses them as human shields, a woman from Shandwat village.
“Now the military column is heading to the villages. The military column is approaching Palawkone, Nateaintaung and Shandwat. The military council arrests men and women in Palawkone and Nateaintaung villages. The people from those villages have fled to safer places,” she told the KIC.
The military column of nearly 200 members is heading to the village. Locals have fled their villages as they fear that the military may besiege the villages, the local woman added.
The people from Palawkone, Nateaintaung, Kainggyi, Inmawa, Shandwat and Kyauklake villages have fled for their lives, according to locals.
There may be clashes as these areas are under the control of the Karen National Union (KNU), and local People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) are active there, according to locals.
