The refugees from Kyauktalone IDP camp in Kyaukphyu in Arakan State, are worrying about their accommodation difficulties due to the flooding at the new place.

The houses built at the new place are flooded due to the recent heavy rains. They may face flooding if they move to the new place during the rainy season.

Ko Kyaw Myo Hlaing from Kyauktalone IDP camp told the DMG: “How can we stay there during the rainy season? All the houses will be under flooded water. The government said it would do landfill and build the houses to avoid flooding. Now the houses are under water even in the pre-monsoon season. What they said goes against what they did.”
The place where the houses are being built for the IDPs from Kyaukphyu, is a low-laying lake. Water from the nearby creek inflows into that lake when there is rain. The water level has increased by at least one feet, the refugees say.

Daw Nyo Nyo from Kyauktalone IDP camp said: “We don’t want to move to the new place. We can do nothing if the government forces us to move to that place. The flooded houses are built on the highland area. The rest will be built on the low lying area. We would like to call on the officials to build the houses by filling in the land.”

“We plan to build the houses for the relocation of the refugees from Kyauktalone IDP camp to a place located about one furlong of the camp this year, U Myo Min Tun, Kyaukphyu Township Administrator told the DMG.

Plan is under way to build more than 300 houses at the new place. Currently, more than 100 houses have been built there.

“We are discussing the flooding at the new place with the officials. Some places are under water. Flooding is common in the villages. We can solve this problem with the use of drainage system, he added.

More than 1,000 Muslim and Kaman people from 368 households are taking shelter at Kyauktalone IDP camp. They moved to the IDP camp from the wards in downtown Kyaukphyu due to the racial conflict in 2012.
