The Central Executive Committee of the Karen National Union (KNU) issued a statement on December 20th, calling on the UN to designate the Lay Kay Kaw area as a no-fly zone as the military council may carry out airstrikes which may lead to mass killings and severe human rights violations, at any time.

In its statement, the KNU called for the withdrawal of the military council from the conflict-hit areas in order to save its face.

The KNU urged the commanders and captains from the military council to cooperate with the public so as to save our country from becoming a failed state.

The military council’s promise to withdraw from future politics and the establishment of a federal democratic union is the only answer to end a more than 70-year-long civil war.

The KNU also called on the Thai government to help international organizations meet with the Myanmar refugees displaced by fighting and provide necessary aid to them.

The number of locals who fled to Thailand has reached 5,000. The IDPs are in need of food, medicines and makeshift tents.
