Two locals were killed and five others injured as the military council fired heavy shells into Padaekaw village in Kyaukkyi Township in Nyaunglebin District on September 29th, according to an official of the Karen Social Affairs Organization-Nyaunglebin District.
“On the evening of September 29th, the heavy shell killed two locals and injured five others at Bawkahtar camp. Bawkahtar Bridge is located in Padaekaw village in Kyaukkyi Township in Nyaunglebin District. There is a camp in Bawkahtar. Bawkahtar is located on Kyaukkyi-Shwegyin road. Padaekaw village is located beside the road. Some locals have fled to the forests due to the fear,” said the official of the Karen Social Affairs Organization-Nyaunglebin District.
“Padaekaw village and Mabi village are located beside the road. Padaekaw village has 837 households and a population of 4,077. They fled to the forest as the village is located on the foot of the mountain,” he added.
Although civil society organizations are helping the displaced locals, there is still much to be done.
Padaekaw village in Kyaukkyi Township of Nyaunglebin District is located in the Brigade-3 Territory of the Karen National Union (KNU).
Tension continues to mount between the military council and Brigade-3 of the KNU, and fighting is taking place every day in Kyaukkyi and Mone Townships in Nyaunglebin District which is the KNU’s Brigade-3 Territory, the official of the Nyaunglebin District Karen Social Affairs Organization.
On September 17th, the heavy shell fired by the military council hit and killed a local woman from Taungsu village in Mone Township in Nyaunglebin District, who returned to the village to bring rations.
The military council force is carrying out the firing of heavy shells into the villages in Nyaunglebin District and committing different forms of human rights violations such as the arrests, tortures and forced eviction of locals, according to locals.
So far, more than 20 locals have been killed in Nyaunglebin District due to the military council’s human rights violations, according to the list compiled by the Karen Social Affairs Organization-Nyaunglebin District.
