Three civilians were killed and four others wounded in aerial bombings carried out by the military council on a displacement camp in the eastern part of Demoso Township, Karenni State, at noon on 15 January, according to the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF)

A local resident said, “Two members of a family died instantly. The victims, a woman and a man, were siblings. Their mother sustained facial injuries, but her condition is not life-threatening.”

The individuals killed in the bombings were a 38-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man, who were family members. Another woman also died while receiving treatment, according to Tar Eh Soe, a spokesperson for the KNDF.

The injured victims include two women and two men, who sustained wounds to their legs, thighs, and faces. They are currently receiving treatment, he added.

Tar Eh Soe stated, “The area bombed by the military council was a camp solely for internally displaced persons (IDPs). It was not a military target. This unprovoked attack on civilians, with no fighting taking place, is a deliberate act of killing innocent people and constitutes a crime against humanity.”

Tar Eh Soe said, “The areas targeted by the junta’s airstrikes include IDP camps and villages, none of which are directly involved in military activities. These include villages in the western part of Pekon Township, as well as villages and displacement camps in the eastern part of Loikaw and western part of Demoso. These are not military targets and are located far from active combat zones.”

A local resident reported that on the night of 15 January, the military council’s Battalion-102, based in Ngwe Taung, fired heavy shells at the eastern part of Demoso Township.

The local resident said, “The military council has been continuously firing heavy shells since last night. The IDPs haven’t fled yet, but they are deeply worried.”

He added that on the night of 14 January, the military council also bombed Loikaw Township.

Locals are fearful as the military council has carried out at least 11 aerial bombings in early 2025, targeting Loikaw and Demoso Townships in Karenni State, as well as the western part of Pekon on the Shan-Karenni border.
