A 16-year-old girl working as a daily-wage laborer at an upland farm was killed instantly, and four others were injured when a heavy shell fired by the military council landed and exploded on a farm near the village in Moebye, located on the Shan-Karenni (Kayah) border, according to the Moebye Social Rescue Organization.
According to the Moebye Social Rescue Organization, at around 3 PM on 1 March, a heavy shell fired by the junta struck a farm, killing a woman and injuring three women and a man. One of the injured women is in critical condition.
An official from the Moebye Social Rescue Organization said, “The victims are displaced people. They were struck by the shell while working as daily-wage laborers on the upland farm.”
According to a statement from the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) on 1 March, since the 2021 coup until February 2025, the junta’s attacks, arrests, and killings have resulted in the deaths of 743 underage children. According to the AAPP statement, nearly 300 of those killed were children under the age of 10.
According to the resistance force, intense fighting broke out on 28 February between the military council, which advanced into Moebye, and the joint resistance force, resulting in the deaths of four resistance members. The junta soldiers eventually withdrew.
Local residents report that as the resistance force blocks the junta soldiers from advancing into Karenni State via Moebye town, the junta soldiers have been consistently attacking civilian areas where no fighting is taking place, using shelling and airstrikes.
The Karenni Human Rights Group stated on 28 February that 2024 saw the highest number of civilian casualties in Moebye and Pekon towns along the Shan-Karenni border.
