The military council has relocated the entire Htone Khar prison near Htone Khar village in Tanintharyi Townshihp, Tanintharyi Region, after reports surfaced that resistance forces were preparing a raid, according to local defense forces.
The military council moved all the staff and inmates of Htoke Khar prison to Kyaukhpyutaung detention center with a security convoy of more than 30 soldiers, according to members of the local defense forces.
The Htone Khar prison camp is only about three miles away from the Myanmar Army’s strategic hill in Tanintharyi and the entire prison camp was likely relocated as the security of the facility could not be guaranteed, said Ko Sai Nyi, a spokesman for the KTLA-TCJF.
As the convoy was transporting the prisoners, it was attacked by combined resistance forces with landmines between Yanhpo and Kanto villages, with possible casualties.
Currently, the area around the Htone Khar prison camp is under the control of combined local resistance groups. With some junta soldiers still stationed at the camp, tensions between the two sides are high and fighting could break out at any time, according to local resistance forces.
Also on 5 October, at least three military council soldiers were killed when junta soldiers patrolling the Htone Khar prison camp and Kanbawza palm plantation were ambushed, according to local resistance groups.
In Tanintharyi Township, where the military council has imposed martial law, the military council has lost control over most of the territory while preparations are underway to defend the town in anticipation of an urban war in the face of ongoing seizures of towns.
