The military junta has bombed Hu Kwet village in Kyaukme Township in Shan State without any fighting on the ground, according to local sources.
The junta bombed the monastery twice at around 1pm on 17 August, destroying the monastery’s zayat (rest house) and two dining halls and injuring a novice.
“It’s been just two days since we were back from the tea plantation. In the afternoon, they bombed the monastery twice. The bombs exploded on the monastery grounds. The main building of the monastery, the rest house and the dining hall were destroyed beyond repair. Now we are back at the tea plantation because we are afraid,” said a local woman from Kyaukme.
In a similar incident, on 16 August, the military junta bombed Namhsan, which is under the control of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), for the second time, according to the TNLA’s information department.
In December 2023, the junta dropped a 500-pound bomb on Hu Kwet village in Kyaukme Township. The bombing killed one civilian and injured four others, including a woman and two children, according to local residents.
The TNLA and allied forces took full control of Military Operations Command 1 and the Light Infantry Battalions 501 and 502 stationed in Kyaukme on 6 August.
Since early August, the military junta has intensified its airstrikes on Kutkai, Namhsan, Manton, Kyaukme and Nawnghkio even though the Three Brothers Alliance has called on the Chinese government to stop the junta’s airstrikes.
