Junta bombing in busy Mrauk-U area leaves six dead, seven injured

The military junta bombed the intersection near the Mrauk-U Hotel on the road to Shitthaung Pagoda in Kyet Zay Ward with fighter jets, killing six civilians and injuring seven others, according to local sources.

“Six people died on the spot. Seven were injured. Two local passenger vehicles were completely destroyed. A father and his son also died instantly in one of these cars. The total death toll is six,” said a resident of Mrauk-U who visited the scene.

Locals report that the junta’s fighter jet dropped a bomb near the Mrauk-U Hotel and U Ottama Park on the road to Shitthaung Pagoda at around 12:30pm on 10 August.

The deceased were men, and according to a local resident, the bombed area was a busy location with cars, travelers and stores.

“This area is very busy. They dropped a bomb there and then circled the area nearby,” the resident said.

Some shopkeepers were among the dead. Cars, sidecars, three-wheelers (tuk-tuks) and motorcycles were also damaged, he added.

Earlier, at around 2am on 6 August, the junta also reportedly fired rockets twice at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) office near Oke Pho Kan village in Mrauk-U.

In addition, a fighter jet dropped two bombs near Wai Thar Li village in Mrauk-U Township at around 1pm on 4 June, injuring a seventh grader from the village.

Similarly, the junta dropped two bombs behind the District General Administration Office and the court in Lay Myo Sar Ward in Mrauk-U at around 10am on 14 May, with no casualties.
