Myanmar military airstrikes targeting civilian areas near the famous Ngapali Beach in Thandwe Township, Rakhine State, injured seven people and destroyed ten buildings, including a resort bungalow, according to a statement released by the Arakan Army (AA) News and Information Service.
The attacks, which took place on July 23, hit the Jitaw and Lintha Beach areas.
According to the AA, a military fighter jet carried out the first strike around 12:00 p.m., dropping bombs on the Palay Ratana (Pearl Jewel) Monastery and nearby residences in Jitaw (5) Ward.
A second airstrike at approximately 1:30 p.m. targeted the AZ Family Resort on Lintha Beach.
The bombings left seven civilians injured, including a Buddhist monk, 45-year-old Ashin Khemananda, and a 17-month-old toddler, Maung Lin Htet Paing.
The other victims were identified as Ma Soe Khaing (23), Maung Aung Ko Lin (24), Daw Nyo Htwe (53), U Win Aung (60), and U Shwe Hton (74).
Local sources confirmed that the blasts heavily damaged the Palay Ratana Monastery, eight surrounding residential houses, and the bungalows of the AZ Family Resort.
Rakhine State has seen intensifying clashes between the Myanmar military junta and the Arakan Army, with civilian infrastructure increasingly caught in the crossfire.
The military junta has not yet issued an official statement regarding Thursday’s airstrikes.
