The state law officer reported that between January and March 2025, the Karenni State Interim Executive Council took action against seven rape-related cases, which were investigated by the Office of the Legal Affairs Supervisor under the IEC’s Justice Department in Karenni State.
“To summarize, there are seven rape cases. Two are currently under investigation, while the remaining five have been closed, with four of them fully resolved,” said State Law Officer Khun Justin.
The perpetrators in three cases—one in western Demoso, one in Mese Township, and one attempted rape in eastern Demoso—were each sentenced to 10 years in prison, according to State Law Officer Khun Justin.
He also stated that, after investigating an attempted rape case involving members of an armed group, the accused was returned to the relevant force.
Khun Justin stated that two cases are currently under investigation—one in Hoyar Village, located in western Phruso, and the other in western Demoso Township.
Khun Justin said the court acquitted the accused in the rape case that occurred in western Demoso, but the IEC will continue to appeal the verdict in accordance with the victim’s wishes.
Locals report that the ongoing armed conflict and weakened rule of law have led to a rise in rape, sexual assault, and domestic violence in Karenni State.
“Sexual violence is especially reported in IDP camps and economically strategic areas, where people from different communities live together. Domestic violence is common in nearly all IDP camps,” said a 23-year-old displaced woman from western Demoso Township.
The woman further emphasized that all instances of violence should be reported to the authorities so that appropriate action can be taken.
The Township Court is currently investigating a case of child sexual assault that occurred in western Demoso Township in April 2025.
