Karenni Midwives Society (KMS) is still unable to provide adequate healthcare and nutrition to pregnant women and children under 5 years old in Mawchi and Mese Townships in Karenni State due to remote location and poor transportation, said Naw Lway Htoo, Chair of the KMS.
“We will try to provide healthcare services in Mese and Mawchi where midwives are accessible. However, the challenges of poor connectivity and difficult road access hinder our ability to reach these areas, Naw Lway Htoo added.
Currently, the KMS is providing basic healthcare services such as the vaccinations for pregnant mothers and children under five and providing the necessary nutritional and healthcare support, in Loikaw, Demoso, Hpruso, Moebye and Pekon Townships.
The KMS was formed in 2022. Currently, the KMS is delivering healthcare services with over 100 health staff and operating 28 clinics on the ground, Naw Lwe Htoo said.
The KMS requires assistance to ensure its long-term sustainability and ongoing provision of healthcare services.
“We are working, but we are unable to financially support our health staff. We are afraid that we cannot support them. We don’t have a large amount of funds, and our connectivity is weak. Some midwives are working on the ground, some of whom are our members. Some volunteer nurses are from other organizations. All of them are part of KMS, said Naw Lway Htoo.
In the first week of July, for the first time, the Women and Children Affairs Department under the Karenni State Interim Executive Council (IEC) provided aid to more than 150 pregnant mothers in Demoso, Hpruso and Pekon Townships, in collaboration with the KMS.
An official from the IEC’s Women and Children Affairs Department stated, ” We are helping pregnant women with urgent needs and offering support to those who require emergency operations.”
In Karenni State, where nearly 300,000 residents have been displaced, pregnant women and children under five years old are in urgent need of help.
