A 30-year-old woman from Htar ward in Hakha Township of Chin State lost her left leg after stepping on a landmine on 1 March, according to locals.
At around 2.30 pm on 1 March, three women who returned from a plantation stepped on a landmine near the Independence Monument called Khusilobo in Hakha. Two of her companies did not get any wounds.
The wounded woman is receiving medical treatment at Hakha People’s Hospital.
The place near Hakha Htar area mainly grows potatoes. Locals usually use the road where the mine explosion occurred.
The military council troops are active there and usually fire heavy shells to other places, according to a local from Hakha.
“Almost every day, the soldiers take position beside the Cross on Prayer Mountain. They fire heavy shells into Thantlang very often. I saw dust when the military fired heavy shells,” she said.
Junta soldiers are present at the District Fire Services Office and the NLD office almost every day, she added.
There are frequent mine accidents near Hakha. On 18 February, a 60-year-old man who collected firewood lost his one leg as he stepped on a landmine on Hakha-Gangaw road.
