Fierce fighting broke out between military council troops and resistance forces near Chaunghnitpauk village on Taninthayi-Mawtaung Road in Tanintharyi Region, the People’s Defense Forces-Tanintharyi told Than Lwin Times.
The fighting broke out after a column of more than 50 soldiers entered Chaunghnitpauk village on the evening of 28 March and was attacked by the resistance forces. Fighting remained intense until 29 March, but the death toll could not be confirmed.
According to reports, regime troops stationed in Yaybyu village fired artillery continuously during the fighting between the two sides, forcing thousands of residents of Chaunghnitpauk, Theinkhon and Indaw villages to flee to safety.
Earlier, there had been casualties on 19 March when regime troops stationed at the toll gate near Chaunghnitpauk village came under attack.
Clashes between military council troops and local defense forces have continued since the military regime imposed martial law on Tanintharyi Township on 2 February.
