Clashes between military council troops and the People’s Defense Forces (PDF) in Seikphyu Township, Magway Region, have forced more than 1,000 civilians to flee to safety, locals told Than Lwin Times.
Fighting reportedly broke out in the township on the evening of 14 February, and residents of nearby villages were forced to flee to safer locations.
A local resident told Than Lwin Times that the fighting took place near Hsaing Phyu village and as a result, people fled their homes while some were packing their belongings to leave the village.
The regime’s troops fired artillery at Kyarbay, Bekya, Kanphyu (West), Sarlauk and Thanpuyarpin villages before they entered the villages, injuring two residents, he said.
More than 1,000 people reportedly fled the villages in the area to safety.
On the morning of 15 February, regime troops shelled Ywama (South) village with artillery and set up camp on the pagoda hill.
Since the military coup, the Myanmar military has set fire to at least 57,807 civilian homes and displaced nearly two million people, according to ISP Myanmar.
According to reports, most Seikphyu residents have been displaced since 13 February when regime forces entered Yaykyaw village in Pauk Township and are in need of food and relief supplies.
In addition, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), 2,989 people have died as a result of junta atrocities and while nearly 20,000 have been detained.
