Casualties mount on both sides as fighting in Tanintharyi continues

Casualties continue to rise on both sides during the ongoing fighting along the Tanintharyi-Maw Taung road section in Tanintharyi Township, Tanintharyi Region, according to resistance officials.

Fighting has been taking place daily near Yebyu, Thein Khun, and Chaung Hnit Pauk villages since 18 December 2024, after the military junta launched an offensive with a large number of troops in the area.

Fighting between the two sides continued until 19 January, and at least 30 clashes have occurred within a month, according to resistance officials.

During this period of conflict, over 40 fatalities have been reported on the junta’s side, with resistance forces capturing five junta soldiers alive and seizing assorted weapons and ammunition. In addition, four resistance members have been reported to be killed and some others injured.
A resistance official said, “The junta troops are still stationed within Thein Khun village until 20 January, and the military tensions between both sides remain high.”

According to reports, the Tanintharyi-Maw Taung road section remains closed to date, with no passenger vehicles permitted to travel through the area.

During the fighting, the military reportedly conducted airstrikes with fighter jets, dropping at least 10 bombs on 18 and 20 December.

According to displaced persons’ accounts, approximately 1,000 residents from Yebyu, Hton Ma Khar, Chaung Hnit Pauk, and Thein Naw villages have been displaced for over a month, facing significant challenges with basic necessities and livelihood.
