Border guard police’s mistaken shooting kills a man in Maungdaw

A 38-year-old man from Meetike village in Maungdaw Township was shot dead by No.2 Border Guard Police (Branch), at around 6 pm on March 13rd, said U Maung Thar Tun, village administrator.

U Kyaw Maung Thar was shot while he returned to his home after fishing near the village. Officials of the Border Guard Police contacted the locals after he got shot. He was seriously injured and died on the way to Maungdaw Hospital.
“I heard the sound of four gunshots. The police took the victim to the police outpost. The police urged two or three people from the village to go to the outpost and to arrange a car to carry an injured person. The police said they mistakenly shot him,” U Maung Thar Tun told the Development Media Group (DMG).
Deputy Police Major Myint Kyaw Oo from Maungdaw Myoma Police Station said: “It is linked to the border guard police. It has nothing to do with us. The police force is different.”
The victim earns his living by doing farming and agriculture. He has four family members left. Meetike village is home to Daingnat and Maramagyi races and has over 150 households.
