Refugees from Myanmar in the southern town of Siaha in Mizoram State reported that local authorities, in cooperation with civil organizations, are collecting their biometric data.
The data collection began after Mara Thyutlia Py (MTP) – a local organization in Siaha – made an announcement in the neighborhood stating its intention to collect data from all refugees from Myanmar, said one of the refugees from Myanmar seeking refuge in the town.
“MTP informed the neighborhoods about the upcoming data collection from Myanmar refugees using loudspeakers. We’ve learned that they have completed data collection in one neighborhood. They are collecting the data in other neighborhoods. They have stressed that they won’t take responsibility for future problems if the refugees don’t provide the necessary personal information,” the refugee said.
Myanmar refugees seeking refuge in Siaha are required to visit the MTP office and provide personal information such as name, photo and address, as well as be fingerprinted and undergo iris recognition.
There is growing concern among the refugees from Myanmar about their safety because they have to provide their biometric data.
“They are not only collecting our names and addresses, but also taking fingerprints and iris scans. That makes us wonder what they are up to. Many of us are concerned about this. Also, we are worried that if we don’t comply, we could get in trouble,” he said.
When asked, Pakhaw Choza, the president of the Siaha MTP, replied that they are conducting the data collection as per the instructions of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, but they don’t know the purpose behind the data collection.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs said the data collection is for biometric mapping purposes. It is not our initiative. The instructions came from the central government. We have the impression that the government wants to know the exact numbers of Myanmar refugees living in the town. So I don’t think they need to worry,’ he said.
Data collection of Myanmar refugees is planned for the entire state of Mizoram, but the process has reportedly not yet begun in other townships.
