88 Generation Student Leader Ko Mya Aye, writer Maung Thar Cho, Shwe Nya War Sayadaw U Pyin Nyar Thiha and Dr. Myo Nyunt, the spokesperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD) are among those who got the military council’s amnesty.
“I will always be with Myanmar people,” Ko Mya Aye told journalists.
The military council released 5,774 inmates from respective prisons across the country. The number of the inmates who were charged under political charges and released is 712.
Among those who got the military council’s amnesty are: Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s economic adviser Mr. Sean Turnell, UK’s former ambassador Vicky Bowman, Vicky Bowman’s husband Artist Htein Lin and Japanese filmmaker Toru Kubota, US citizen Kyaw Htay Oo and comedian Sin Ma.
The military council also released former Tanintharyi Region Chief Minister Dr. Daw Lei Lei Maw who was sentenced under corruption charges in the reign of the NLD, former ministers U Kyaw Tint Swe and U Than Htay.
The military council closed the cases against 11 artists opened under Section 505 (a). They are Bone Thike, Phway Phway, Mal Min Bone, Su Mon, Ni Ni Khin Zaw, Thiha Phyo, Yun Waddy Lwin Moe, Thazin Htoo Myint, Htet Htet Tun and Nan Khin Zay Yar.
Most of the political prisoners who got amnesty are the ones who had been sentenced to two years in prison and the ones who are going to end their prison terms, according to the lawyers who are representing political prisoners.
