Members of the Arakan Army (AA) abducted a police corporal from the Ma-Ei Police Station in Toungup Township in Ward-2 of Ma-Ei at around 9 p.m. on August 1st, locals said.
The arrested man is U Tun Shwe Maung, a 50-year-old police corporal from Ma-Ei Police Station, said a police official at the police station who did not want to be named.
“He was arrested in front of a preschool in Ward-2 while riding a motorcycle from Ward-2, where he lives, to the police station to perform his security duties. AA members arrested him. It is not yet known why he was arrested and where he was taken,” the police official said.
Following the police corporal’s arrest, the administrators of Ward-1, 2, 3 and 4 were summoned to be investigated by the military junta, a ward administrator said on condition of anonymity.
“They [ward administrators] were summoned today. But they were asked to go home because the Ward-4 administrator was away on a trip at the time. I heard they were asked to come back. The constable who was arrested is a good-natured person. We have no idea why he was arrested,” said a ward administrator.
Locals report that junta soldiers are active in Ma-Ei.
On July 24th, after members of the AA arrested the chief of Sane Police Station, military council soldiers entered Sane and arrested some locals, charging one of them under Section 505 of the Penal Code.
