The military forced the people to move their houses in Gyaingthar village in Kyaukkalat village-tract in Thandwe Township in Arakan State within 15 days as from April 26th, according to locals.

A villager said: “This is the third eviction notice. We are accustomed to living here. The villagers worry about their accommodation if they have to relocate to another place.”

In 2018, the military evicted the villagers. This is the third time.

Fishing is the major business for most of the people in Gaingthar village. They may face difficulties in the coming rainy season if they have to move their houses, the villagers said.

U Ko Ko Naing, administrator of Kyaukkalat village-tract said: “The military plans to relocate the people from Jaingthar village to Aseinma mountain located about two miles from the village and prepare for water supply. The government plans to provide Ks-150,000 each for a household. I don’t know why the military urged the villagers to move.”

Since 1976, the villagers have long been living there after land clearance. The military designated the village as the military-owned land in 1996. A house has to pay a tax of Ks-500 for one year.
