The Interim Magway Federal Unit government will hold a third round of talks on joining the Steering Committee for the Establishment of a Federal Democratic Union (SCEF) as a member, according to the Magway Federal Unit.
A delegation led by SCEF’s rotating chairman, Khu Oo Reh, met for the second time with a Magway delegation that included Interim Magway Federal Unit Prime Minister Dr. Yae Htun Zaw and Magway Federal Unit Parliament Speaker Htay Htay Hlaing, in an online meeting on the evening of 15 August.
At the meeting, both sides discussed SCEF’s structure, its operational framework, and the proposal for Magway to join as a member.
The talks were described as constructive, but since detailed matters remain unresolved, both sides agreed to continue discussions at a third meeting.
“There will be another announcement. Please wait for that too. We don’t want to release information before it’s official,” Magway Federal Unit Deputy Prime Minister Chit Win Maung told Mizzima regarding the state of the talks.
SCEF successfully brought in the Sagaing Federal Unit and the Mandalay region as its first new members on 13 and 14 August, following separate talks, a milestone in Upper Myanmar’s military-strategic landscape.
Political analysts assess that if the Magway Federal Unit joins SCEF through this ongoing third round of talks, it would further strengthen the command structure of revolutionary forces across Upper Myanmar, posing the most significant military and territorial threat to the junta yet.
SCEF, formed on 30 March by major revolutionary organizations including the KNU, KIO, NUG, CRPH, KNPP, and CNF, was announced from the outset as being built on three pillars: federal units and ethnic armed organizations, a body representing the public, and a body representing women.
SCEF’s primary objective is to eliminate the junta through “One Command, One Strategy.”
As part of this process, SCEF has established a dedicated Military Affairs Committee, jointly chaired by senior military leaders from the KNU and KIO, with the NUG Minister of Defense serving as secretary.
