Myanmar shares borders with China to the north, Laos to the east, Thailand to the southeast, Bangladesh to the west, and India to the northwest. For nearly 60 years after independence, Myanmar was ruled by the military regime known as the “Tatmadaw”. During this time, neighbouring countries focused on their own interests in Myanmar’s abundant natural resources, and had stronger relationships with the military regime rather than the people of Myanmar. As a result, the neighbouring governments maintained a strong relationship with the Tatmadaw for an extended period of time.
Amidst the ongoing protests, resistance by the people of Myanmar, and international pressures against the military regime following the coup, neighbouring governments have failed to take a bold stance in support of the people of Myanmar or the military council. However, as the people of Myanmar continue their Spring Revolution, the positions of Myanmar’s neighbours remain unclear.
This issue of the Burma News International (BNI) – Myanmar Peace Monitor (MPM) Weekly News Review focuses on the approaches of Myanmar’s neighbours, including China, Thailand, India, and Bangladesh, to the situation in Myanmar.
