New Zealand and Indonesia’s foreign ministers on 28 August called on Myanmar’s ruling authorities and all conflict parties to end the violence, allow safe and unimpeded humanitarian access, and take part in inclusive dialogue among all stakeholders.
According to a joint statement issued after their 13th Joint Ministerial Commission meeting in Auckland, New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters and Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono exchanged views on Myanmar’s political crisis and its impact on the region, reaffirming the importance of ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus, the regional bloc’s 2021 roadmap for resolving Myanmar’s crisis, in supporting a peace process that is led and owned by Myanmar itself.
Myanmar has been engulfed in conflict since the military seized power in a February 2021 coup, triggering nationwide armed resistance and a humanitarian crisis that has displaced millions of people.
Beyond Myanmar, the ministers’ wider review of the New Zealand-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership covered the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the war in Ukraine, and tensions in the South China Sea, according to the statement.
