More than 240 schools targeted by airstrikes in two and a half years

The National Unity Government (NUG) Ministry of Human Rights on 13 May reported that, over a period of more than two years, the military council has conducted over 2,600 airstrikes, resulting in the destruction of more than 240 schools.

The NUG’s Ministry of Human Rights stated that there were 2,679 airstrikes between 12 May 2023, and 1 January 2025, and the figures were collected during this period.

Currently, the military council has announced an extension of a temporary nationwide ceasefire until 31 May 2025, but attacks targeting civilians have continued to increase.

The NUG said that targeted attacks on religious buildings, schools, and hospitals have increased.

The NUG stated that on 12 May 2025, the military council carried out an aerial attack on Oe Htein Twin village in Depayin Township, Sagaing Region, killing students and teachers, injuring 102 civilians, and forcing many others to flee to safety.

According to a statement from the NUG’s Ministry of Human Rights, at approximately 9:35 am on 12 May 2025, a terrorist military junta launched an aerial attack on a school in Oe Htein Twin village, Depayin Township, Sagaing Region.

The attack resulted in the deaths of 20 students and 2 volunteer teachers, with over 102 civilians injured. Following the bombing, around 500 villagers from Oe Htein Twin village—home to 300 households—fled to safety.

Targeting children during armed conflict constitutes a war crime, and the military council is committing such inhumane violations widely and systematically.

The Ministry of Human Rights has stated that it will strive to ensure justice is pursued not only in international courts but also in the courts of other nations, so that the military council can be held criminally accountable for these violations.

In addition, the Ministry of Human Rights strongly condemned the inhumane attacks and called on the international community, including the United Nations, to exert pressure on the military council to halt its ongoing attacks on civilian populations.
