Junta airstrike on Kyauktaw kills young woman

The military junta carried out an airstrike on Kyauktaw town, Arakan State, on the evening of 14 May, killing a young civilian woman, according to residents.

On 14 May, at 3:51 p.m., a junta fighter jet dropped a bomb on Taung Bet Su Ywar Ma Ward, located west of Shwe Kyaung [monastery] in Kyauktaw.

The attack killed a young woman instantly and injured two men. The injured men were taken for medical treatment, as witnessed by a resident who arrived at the scene.

“The girl who died was probably in her early teens. Her body was so badly mutilated, it was unrecognizable. Flesh and remains were scattered everywhere. We still don’t know whose daughter she was,” the resident said, adding that there could be additional casualties.

Reportedly, over 10 homes were also damaged due to shrapnel from the explosion.

Kyauktaw town had previously been targeted by junta airstrikes on 13 and 19 April, which left one civilian man dead and 24 others injured.

On the morning of 13 May, the military junta also conducted an airstrike on Htun Ya Wai village (Ywar Haung) in Rathedaung Township, dropping two 500-pound bombs from a jet fighter.

The attack killed 13 civilians, including a two-year-old child, and injured more than 20 others.
