Tensions high around Yae Myet Gyi Lake as junta continues offensives

Tensions between junta troops and local defense forces have escalated around the Yae Myet Gyi Lake in Sagaing Township, Sagaing Region, over the past week as the military junta has launched offensives in the surrounding areas of the lake, according to residents.

On 28 April, junta troops entered and stationed themselves in Sar Yay village near the Yae Myet Gyi Lake, and have since continued their offensives in the area, a local resident reported.

In addition to ground offensives, the junta has also conducted airstrikes on nearby villages such as Pa Du and Khet Kha, resulting in injuries among villagers, locals stated.

Meanwhile, local defense forces attacked junta military outposts near Pe Ka Toe village on 29 April, according to a resident.

“I’ve heard that the fighting took place yesterday, 29 April, in Pe Ka Toe village. Clashes around that area have been happening quite frequently,” the resident said.

In northern Sagaing Township, the military situation remains tense, with transportation and movement becoming increasingly difficult, locals reported.

The area around Yae Myet Gyi Lake area was one of the epicenters of the powerful earthquake that struck on 28 March, and it includes villages that have sustained some damage.

Despite claims from both the National Unity Government (NUG) and the junta that they would temporarily cease hostilities to support recovery efforts in the earthquake-affected areas, clashes between the two sides continue to erupt.
