At least 12 civilians were killed and over 300 arrested in March due to shootings and attacks by military junta and other armed groups during the ongoing armed clashes, according to a statement from FE5 Thaninthatyi, a local research group.
In Tanintharyi Township, where intense fighting is ongoing, the junta has been conducting military operations around Thein Khun village for an extended period of time, forcing local residents to flee and seek shelter.
Most civilian deaths were caused by artillery fire, according to the statement.
An official from FE5 Thaninthatyi said: “As many as eight civilians were killed by the junta in Tanintharyi Township, where tensions remain high.”
On the other hand, a Pyu Saw Htee militia leader and an administrator in Palaw Township were killed during operations by resistance groups to eliminate junta informants, according to the statement.
Furthermore, the junta arrested at least 334 civilians under various pretexts, with 63 subsequently released, according to FE5 Thaninthatyi’s statement.
Over the past three years, at least 723 innocent civilians in Tanintharyi Region have been killed due to the junta’s arrests and killings, as detailed in an FE5 Thaninthatyi report.
