Two of the eight civilians injured by landmines in Karenni (Kayah) State in March were killed, according to the data.
According to the documented list and the information available to the ground-based groups, six people were injured by landmines in Loikaw Township and two, in Nan Mae Khon Township.
Two of the injured from Loikaw have died. It was found that most civilians stepped on landmines while returning to their homes.
A displaced woman from Nan Mae Khon said: “Even though I still have home, there are still mines, and I hear and see that people stepping on mines. So, I don’t want to go home anymore. Even though I still have all my limbs, it’s very difficult to make a living.”
U Banyar, Secretary-2 of the Interim Karenni State Executive Council (IEC), said, “I want displaced people to remain vigilant about the danger of landmines and avoid handling explosive ammunition when they return to their homes. Additionally, there are still some restricted areas, so we urge you to be especially cautious when entering and exiting.”
On 22 March, three civilians were injured and one of them died while playing with a hand-made mine in Pekon Township on the Shan-Karenni border.
