Civilians killed, injured by junta airstrikes in Thandaunggyi

Local residents report that the military junta is continuously bombing Tha Pyay Nyunt village and surrounding areas in Thandaunggyi Township, Karen State, resulting in civilian casualties.

The junta is conducting the airstrikes in response to the capture of its camp in Tha Pyay Nyunt village, according to locals.

A ground source said: “We can confirm that the base has been captured. The photos are already circulating online. It was captured on 8 (March), but the fighting started on 6 (March). The military continues to bomb from the air until today. About three people have been killed, and some are injured.”

“There are no villagers left now. They’re repeatedly bombing villages like Tha Pyay Nyunt, Shwe Pyi Thar Ma Gyi Taw, and Kyauk Gyi Pauk from the air,” the source added.

The Tha Pyay Nyunt military camp, where junta soldiers from Infantry Battalion-73 were stationed was captured by the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and allied forces after three days of fighting.

The KNLA and allied forces began their attack on the camp on 6 March and took compete control of it on the morning of 8 March.

Villagers have fled to safety as the junta continues airstrikes on Tha Pyay Nyunt village and nearby Kyauk Gyi Pauk and Shwe Pyi Thar Ma Gyi Taw villages.

According to locals, the junta airstrikes have killed two villagers from Shwe Pyi Thar Ma Gyi Taw village and one from Kyauk Gyi Pauk village, with at least seven others injured.

Furthermore, after losing the camp, the junta is reportedly sending reinforcements to the Bon Ma Tee village base, which is about seven miles from the lost position.

During the battle for Tha Pyay Nyunt village camp, the junta troops burned down some houses in the village.

Ground sources report that at least eight junta soldiers were killed in the battle, while more than 20 escaped.

Meanwhile, the resistance forces continue their hunt for those who escaped and are continuing to clear the area.

After capturing the Tha Pyay Nyunt  Camp, the KNLA and joint forces seized some weapons and ammunition before burning down the camp, according to reports.
