Junta soldiers are making raids on the villages in Pwintbyu Township in Magway Region using locals as human shields, according to locals.

According to locals, the detainees were being used as human shields by the military column that entered Yae Poke Kalay and Made villages in Pwintbyu Township on 15 February.

“On 16 February, the military column abducted three people living inside the houses in Yae Poke Kalay village. They kicked one detainee into the ditch and shot him dead,” said a local from Yae Poke Kalay.

On 15 February, the military council abducted five locals to use as human shields. They were placed in front of the soldiers and were also hit by landmines.

The exact number of civilians from Yae Poke Kalay and Made villages who were arrested as human shields by the military council is not yet known.

The people have yet to make any contact with those abducted by the military council as human shields. Locals are worried as dead bodies are floating along Mone Creek.

“I don’t know where the bodies are from. I don’t dare to recover the bodies. Some of them don’t even have heads,” said a local from Mone Creek.

The floating of bodies like this also occurred in early February last year, with some of the bodies found wearing military uniforms.

Although the bodies in military uniforms were found a day after fighting with Minbu District Battalion No.7, those discovered after 14 February are believed to be civilians.

A military column of around 200 junta soldiers and Pyu Saw Htee is conducting raids on Made and Kani villages via Yae Poke Kalay village.
