Over 200 displaced people in Tanintharyi Township, Tanintharyi Region, are suffering from diarrhea and rashes, according to those providing aid to the internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Most of those affected are displaced persons hiding in the hills and plantations. Aid workers say the diseases have emerged due to insufficient drinking water and makeshift living conditions without proper toilets.

Among those affected are children and elderly people. Although they are treating them with available medicine, they cannot control the spread of disease due to a medicine shortage, aid workers said.

Meanwhile, the military council has restricted the transport of food, fuel, and medicine to areas under control the control of resistance forces in the region. This has led to shortages of medical supplies.

Fighting began along the Tanintharyi-Mawtaung road on 18 December last year. The fighting continued until 13 February with daily clashes between the two sides.

The fighting has resulted in high casualties on both sides. At least five locals have been killed and nearly 20 injured due to airstrikes and heavy artillery fire.

Due to the ongoing conflict, around 2,000 residents from villages including Yae Phyu, Hton Ma Khar, Chaung Hnit Pauk, and Thein Naw have been displaced for over two months.

Tanintharyi Township consists of over 170 villages, with joint resistance forces controlling more than 120 villages, including the village tracts of Ta Ku, Pa Wa, and Ban La Mut.
