Seven civilians were killed and 17 others injured in the past two weeks due to explosions of remnants of war in Arakan State, according to the local survey data.
Between 1 and 14 February seven civilians were killed and 17 others injured due to explosions of bombs and landmines.
Those killed in the explosions are from Pauktaw, Maungdaw, Taungup and Gwa Townships while the injured are from Pauktaw, Taungup and Maungdaw Townships.
Among those killed and injured are underage children and women.
Due to the rise in explosions from remnants of war and the increasing number of casualties, residents need to exercise caution, said U Tet Tun Aung, a former lower MP from Pauktaw Township.
“The war has not ended yet, and there is a lack of awareness in Pauktaw Township. Some people are handling and tampering with unexploded ordnance. There will be many such cases as long as the war continues. Therefore, the Arakan People’s Government needs to focus on raising awareness,” said U Tet Tun Aung.
On the evening of 12 February, three youths were killed and three others injured when a group of friends tampered with an unexploded bomb that had been collected by a youth from Gyin Dway village in Pauktaw Township.
Due to the rising number of explosions from remnants of war in Arakan State, residents are urging the relevant officials to clear the area as soon as possible.
On the other hand, Arakan residents say that Arakha Army (AA) is cleaning up the war remnants in the townships under its control.
