Resistance forces have been besieging and attacking using attrition warfare since late January to capture the military junta’s Shan Lel Pyin Camp in Thandaung Special Area in Thandaunggyi Township in Karen National Union (KNU) Brigade-2 Area, according to sources.
According to the resistance forces, the Shan Lel Pyin Camp, located within Thandaung Special Area, is not only strategically significant but also very close to Nay Pyi Taw, where many military council offices are based, making it a crucial target.
The resistance forces are attempting to capture the camp by cutting off supply routes and conducting in an attrition warfare style operation, including blocking the movement of food, personnel, and other supplies both inside and outside the camp.
A resistance member said: “We’ve cut off their food supplies, and it’s becoming difficult for them to leave the camp. There hasn’t been any counterattack on the ground since they did last time. We’re advancing with attrition warfare tactics. It’s psychological warfare as well.”
On 6 February, resistance forces also clashed with about 30 junta soldiers who were advancing towards the Shan Lel Pyin Camp from Shwe Nan Ka Lay village, after intercepting them, according to military sources.
During the skirmish, numerous junta soldiers, including the deputy commander of IB-29, were injured or killed, with their bodies being collected by the resistance forces, who also seized several weapons.
However, the junta has been responding with heavy airstrikes and artillery bombardments around the area since the siege began, a resistance fighter said.
“They’ve launched two airstrikes so far. Now, people from Shan Lel Pyin village are taking shelter in nearby villages or have gone into town,” he added.
Villages in the Shan Lel Pyin village tract of Leiktho Sub-township, had previously experienced heavy shelling and bombings by the junta in September 2023, leading to the occupation of local homes by junta soldiers.
Due to these military actions, villagers from the area have been forced to flee their homes, unable to return for extended periods while the junta troops occupy the area, according to local sources.
