Junta’s airstrikes and shelling kills six, injury 16 in Karenni State

Six civilians including two children and 16 others injured in the military counicl’s airstrikes and shelling in Karenni State in January this year, according to a statement by Karenni Civil Society Network (KSCN) on 5 February.

In addition, the junta’s base camps fired heavy shells at Demoso Township at least five times in January this year. At least 12 heavy shells exploded. As of January 28, there were no reported casualties, although three heavy shells fired at the western part of Demoso landed outside the village.

A local stated, “I am worrying. When my family members heard the sound of the heavy shelling, they didn’t know what to do. I told them, ‘We have God.”

The total number of six deaths includes: two 12-year-old girls who were hit and killed by a shell fired from the Infantry Battalion-530 base in Loilenlay on 10 January; a 38-year-old woman killed in an airstrike in the eastern part of Demoso on 15 January; and a 31-year-old man, a woman in her 50s, and a woman in her 40s from Chikweit village in Bawlakhe Township, all of whom were killed by an airstrike.

The junta’s airstrikes and shelling killed and injured civilians and destroyed the lives and properties of locals.

Fighting continues to intensify in Pekon and Moebye, located on the border of Karenni State and Shan State. In addition to these areas, the junta is attacking nearby villages and IDP camps, using jet fighters and drones, according to locals.

According to a statement by the Progressive Karenni People Force (PKPF), since the coup on 1 February 2021, until 31 January 2025, the military council has conducted 1,788 airstrikes in Karenni State and the central Kayan region.
